What is a Death Doula?

A Death Doula is similar to a birth doula. One compassionately assists those coming into this world and one compassionately assists those leaving this world.  This includes providing emotional, spiritual, informational, and physical support with the goal being a low stress, comfortable, personalized–even, dare I say, positive–experience for clients and their loved ones. Death Doulas work alongside family members, friends and even medical, palliative and hospice workers in hospitals, senior care facilities and private home settings.

Compassionate, Practical Care Regardless of Location

Chances are, if you’ve landed on this page, you’ve found yourself in one of the most painful and difficult situations of your life and you’re in need of guidance and support to get you through. First of all, my heart absolutely goes out to you. I have felt the pain of loss too but I, of course, cannot know exactly what it feels like to walk in your shoes right now. I may have never been in your particular situation but that’s okay, I still can lend a compassionate ear to listen and a helping hand to guide you. Secondly, I’m here to lend you support regardless of where you live in this great big world of ours so don’t feel like you’re on your own. Most of my services are offered via phone or video chat. Thirdly, this page will give you a brief overview of how a death doula might assist you because honestly speaking, you might not even know what you’re looking for or where to begin and that’s completely understandable. Plus, you might not even know what a death doula is and you’re not alone there, most people don’t know…yet!

Personalized and Dignified Treatment

With Wind & Wing’s End-of-Life Doula services, clients are more likely to stay in the comfort of their homes, surrounded by family and friends until they pass; I can help mitigate health and safety risks that could lead to hospitalizations; full-time caregivers can enjoy more frequent respite breaks; I can act as a liaison between the client and the rest of their care team by providing frequent health updates; I can assist clients with the end-of-life planning process and ensure that all necessary advance directives are filled out and filed; I can support and companion clients and their loved ones all throughout the end-of-life process; I can assist clients with completing legacy projects and tying up the loose ends of life; I can coordinate meals, visitations and support between friends and family members; I can assist families with carrying out body disposition plans and celebration of life/memorial services; and I can even organize and distribute my client’s belonging after they pass so the family has more time to focus on grieving and healing.

Death Doula vs End-of-Life Doula

You will find these terms commonly being used interchangeably and to most doulas they mean the exact same thing. I prefer the term “End-of-Life Doula” (sometimes it’s even shortened to EOL Doula) because to me it seems to be the gentlest yet descriptive term. However, I want to cover all of my bases as far as internet searches are concerned so you’ll see me use both on this website.

Healing & Education

Wind & Wing’s services not only positively affect the client, but family members and friends benefit as well. Caregivers feel more supported and less exhausted. Friends and family find more peace in the dying process instead of fear. They will be empowered and supported if they choose to have a home funeral, which can be a very cathartic and healing experience. The community in general is given an opportunity to plan for the end of their lives in approachable and even fun ways, far in advance of when these plans are needed so decisions aren’t made in haste. And Wind & Wing offers pet death doula services as well because we are equally bonded with our animal companions. The services offered by each death doula are as unique as a fingerprint and there is no specific licensing or governing body which makes our profession less cookie-cutter than most. That means that one doula’s offerings may not be what you need but the next one might be a perfect fit. If Wind & Wing isn’t your cup of tea, feel free to contact me and I will help direct you to the right place.
