What is "Wellness"?

There really isn’t a great definition for what wellness is. It can be a rather amorphous, overused, trendy and even scamy term. According to the Global Wellness Insitute, “Wellness is an individual pursuit—we have self-responsibility for our own choices, behaviors and lifestyles—but it is also significantly influenced by the physical, social and cultural environments in which we live. Wellness is often confused with terms such as health, wellbeing and happiness.” To me, wellness is about remaining healthy and happy for as long as humanly possible. It’s not about diet culture, quick fixes or anything that can be bought or sold, especially on social media these days. It’s about taking responsiblity for your past, present and future and building a life that you helps you live in the healthiest, happiest way possible for as long as possible. So it’s about longevity and health-span.

What can I do for you as a wellness counselor?

I practice client-directed wellness counseling. This means that the client and the counselor work together to identify behavioral and lifestyle issues that need improving and address blockages that get in the way of progress. Then they co-create a plan to move forward. This isn’t a set of standardized recommendations based on filling out a questionnaire. It’s all about finding individual-based, attainable goals that are created by the client. It is NOT a counselor telling their client what to do or placing their agenda on to them. It’s not about selling products, jumping on any fads or bandwagons or making decisions based on pseudoscience. It’s the counselor helping the client figure out what is best for them and supporting them in achieving their wellness goals. Overall, it’s about giving the client the tools and support needed to find their own path towards a better, healthier situation. 

Let's Work Together

Wellness counselling sessions usually run 45 minutes to 1 hour and can be done in-person at my wellness space located at The Whimsy Mercantile (2075 East Shore Drive in Lansing, New York), on the phone or through Zoom. So, it doesn’t matter where you are in the world, we can work together. Counseling sessions are $30/hour.

 

Tai Chi Easy and Integral Qigong sessions run 1 hour and can easily be performed in-person at my wellness space or through Zoom. One-on-one classes are $20. I hold group classes at The Whimsy Mercantile on a weekly basis as well, so check the website for the schedule. Group classes are $10/person.

Tai Chi Easy & Medical Qigong

I’m a Tai Chi Easy™ Practice Leader and Level 1 Integral Qigong Teacher through the Institute of Integral for Qigong and Tai Chi (IIQTC). In my life, I’ve never found a mind-body practice that has so many physical and mental benefits for people of all ages and abilities as Qigong and Tai Chi. Although they are different practices, they complement each other and can be customized to improve the lives of everyone. I’m convinced of it and the scientific evidence thus far overwhelmingly supports these beliefs.
